TEXAS STATE BOARD OF DENTAL EXAMINERS CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Remember the State Board will only allow up to 4 hours per year of self-study and up to 4 hours per year of computer interactive courses.

Dentists and Dental Hygienists

All Texas licensees holding and active license to practice in Texas must annually collect a minimum of twelve hours of appropriate continuing education, as required by the Occupations Code at Section, and the State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE) Rules and Regulations at Chapter 104.

Of the annual twelve hours, up to four may be self-study. Examples of self-study courses are journal articles, videos, and on-line courses. Of the remaining eight hours, an additional four hours may be obtained via interactive courses. These courses are internet- based and enable the user to interact with the course provider, or may prevent the user from advancing through the course until satisfactory responses are provided at section/chapter examinations. All computer interactive courses are clearly labeled as such. The remaining four hours must be attended in a lecture or hands-on format.

All hours must be scientific or technical as related to clinical care and must be offered or endorsed by providers listed in SBDE Rule 104.2. All scientific and technical hours must have significant intellectual or practical content and are designed to enhance the practitioner’s knowledge and skill in providing clinical care to the individual patient.

Hours earned for annual OSHA training or basic life support CPR certification may NOT be used for mandatory continuing education hours. Examples of other courses not acceptable for license renewal are: practice management, financial management, risk management, or personal improvement.

Extra hours earned in a classroom or lecture format may be carried forward, or banked, for use in subsequent years. A practitioner may have a maximum of 24 hours carried forward for use in later years

On January 1, 2005, a new requirement for dentists and dental hygienists became effective. State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE) Rule 104.1(3) has been amended to include the following language:

…Effective January 1, 2005, each licensee shall complete three (3) hours of approved coursework in jurisprudence every three (3) years, in addition to the general 12 hour requirement.

For the purposes of this section, “jurisprudence” refers to the body of statutes and regulations pertaining to and governing the licensee’s practice, including relevant portions of the Texas Occupations Code, and the rules enacted by the Board.

Coursework in jurisprudence may be through self-study or interactive computer courses, either of which must be verifiable and provided by those entities cited in 104.2 of this title…

All licensees should plan to meet this requirement before January 1, 2008. At that time, those licenses selected for continuing education audit will be asked to provide proof of jurisprudence taken since January 1, 2005.
